Situated in the East Sea/Inland Sea of Japan, lies a tiny island called Okunoshima, an island with very little except thousands of wild rabbits that roam the forests and paths, chase tourists and lounge around. It felt only right being in Japan – the birthplace of kawaii (the distinct cultural appreciation of all things cute) that we had to visit the island despite its out of the way location. That and the fact that in Winter the rabbits are super hungry and want lots of loving (food)!
We managed the detour by planning the route as a day trip between Osaka and Hiroshima and carefully studying the timetables for the infrequent local trains and ferry crossings.
The ferry was quite busy with locals and children, some carrying wholesale bags of rabbit snacks, vegetables and biscuits. Of course we were not as prepared as the kiasu Japanese folk, so we had to make do with small packets of rabbit food sold at the ferry terminal.
